  3. he was elected to represent a Welsh
  4. constituency in Parliament 1970 (Islwyn from
  5. 1983). He was further left than prime
  6. ministers Wilson and Callaghan, but as party
  7. leader (in succession to Michael Foot)
  8. adopted a moderate position, initiating a
  9. major policy review 1988-89. He initiated the
  10. expulsion of the left-wing Militant Tendency
  11. members from the Labour Party 1986. He is a
  12. good speaker.
