1942- . British Labour politician, party
leader from 1983. Born and educated in Wales,
he was elected to represent a Welsh
constituency in Parliament 1970 (Islwyn from
1983). He was further left than prime
ministers Wilson and Callaghan, but as party
leader (in succession to Michael Foot)
adopted a moderate position, initiating a
major policy review 1988-89. He initiated the
expulsion of the left-wing Militant Tendency
members from the Labour Party 1986. He is a
good speaker.
